The NSW Government today released the next step in the master planning process for the Sydney Olympic Park precinct to become “Sydney’s Beating Green Heart” – starting a conversation about potential big moves to transform the iconic suburb.
Minister for Planning and Minister for Homes Anthony Roberts announced the new Strategic Place Framework together with Sydney Olympic Park Authority CEO, Dr Liz Develin, at an industry event with the Sydney Olympic Park Business Association and Business Western Sydney.
“We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to reimagine Sydney Olympic Park, building on its legacy as a world class events and sports precinct, and transforming it to become a thriving suburb at the heart of Greater Sydney,” Dr Develin said.
“We’re making the biggest investment in Sydney Olympic Park since the ‘best Games ever’ – with excavation for the new Metro station underway and plans on exhibition for over-station development and Parramatta Light rail stage 2. “The new Strategic Place Framework is the next step to realising our Vision for Sydney Olympic Park for 2050 – a place energised with everyday life, country-first and nature-positive and where all of Sydney comes to play,” she said.
The Framework offers a roadmap of the key moves and land use changes necessary to turn Sydney Olympic Park from an event and sport focused precinct into an around-the-clock neighbourhood with new and diverse homes.
Moves included that the Government seeks feedback on are:
- More housing, with a 30% affordable and social housing target across the precinct, plus key worker housing to support jobs in the Parramatta CBD and Westmead Health and Innovation precinct, connected by Metro West
- An active high street and new development over the existing train station – with high quality, day and night-time retail and hospitality experiences
- More places made for people, not cars – with a ‘car-lite’ strategy in the long-term to halve the number of parking spaces for events following the Metro opening
- New infrastructure to support the precinct’s growing community, including sites for schools and
- Conservation and recreation areas along Haslams Creek and Boundary Creek.
Dr Develin said the precinct was uniquely positioned to support new and diverse housing options and jobs growth, social infrastructure, and more green spaces.
“The Framework builds on the work of the 2050 Vision, responds to existing community and stakeholder feedback, and continues the conversation to shape our new master plan for Sydney Olympic Park.”
