World Ranger Day

Get to know your Park Rangers and thank them for the work they do this World Ranger Day.

26 Jun 2023

World Ranger Day is held each year on July 31st to commemorate Rangers killed or injured in the line of duty and to celebrate the work Rangers do to protect the planet’s natural treasures and cultural heritage.

At Sydney Olympic Park, we are proud to belong to an international network protecting reserves, parks and protected areas around the world.

On World Ranger Day 2023, let’s celebrate our own Park Rangers.

1. A helpful guide

Park Rangers are guides, providing information about Park rules and regulations. They help people do the right thing and look after the Park in many ways. They assist in events, report maintenance issues and patrol picnic areas to advise and educate. From finding lost children to reporting illegal fishing and preventing confetti pollution, the Park Rangers are always on the lookout.

2. Excellent communicators

Park Rangers are communicators, empowering and inspiring people from diverse communities both local and from afar about the natural environment. Whether it’s a guided walk, a pre-school activity or a behind the scenes technical tour, our Rangers always share knowledge and inspire visitors to become supporters of our Park.

If you would like a young one to have a ranger experience, check out the Mini Rangers or Junior Rangers program. If you want to join a community volunteer program to remove litter or create habitat with our Park Rangers, Neighbours Nurturing Nature may be the one for you.

3. Enthusiastic ecologists

Our Park Rangers have a strong passion for ecology, and part of their role is looking after natural assets. They monitor water levels, algae, indicators of pollution and wildlife. It was a sharp-eyed Park Ranger who reported the first echidna to be seen in the Park – in the mangroves of all places! Another Park Ranger went to the aid of a patron that reported a snake only to find it was an eel traveling overland to another wetland.

A pelican was rescued by a Park Ranger after becoming entangled in fishing line. Park Rangers have caught and re-homed chickens dumped at the Park. These are all tasks that Rangers do in their ever-surprising role of caretakers to all residents that call the Park home.
